Be it by trades, free agent signings, or prospects making the big club, a team’s roster is always in flux.  Montreal Canadiens new jerseys numbers for 2018-19 reflects the team is in a transition season.

Montreal Canadiens new jerseys numbers for 2018-19

#15 – Jesperi Kotkaniemi

Jesperi Kotkaniemi was the Canadiens first round pick , third overall in the 2018 NHL rookie draft.  At the age of 18, Kotkaniemi is the youngest player in the NHL at the moment.  No 15 was assigned to him during rookie camp.  The number was previously worn by fifty-six other Canadien players over the team’s 109th years history.  Notably of which, Maurice Richard wore it when he was first called into the NHL back into the 1942-43 season.  During the 1970’s and early 1980’s, former Habs GM Rejean Houle wore it.  Bobby Smith for 7 seasons with the Habs.

#13 Max Domi

Max Domi was acquired in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes during the off-season in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk.  Domi previously wore #16 with the Coyotes.  But that number is retired.  So Max Domi went with 13.  No surprise.  Seeing that Domi grew up in Toronto, his dad’s Tie Domi’s teammate, Mats Sundin was his childhood idol.  Other Habs players to have worn No. 13 are Mike Cammelleri and Alex Tanguay.  In total nine players have now worn the lucky number.

#40 Joel Armia

Joel Armia was acquired in a trade with Winnipeg.  The right winger wore #40 for three seasons with the Jets, and carries the same number with the Canadiens.  Ten former Habs have worn this number before, including 5 former goalies.  In fact current Habs prospect Charlie Lindgren wore it when he played his first NHL game with the Canadiens during the 2016-17 season.

#61 Xavier Ouellet

Xavier Ouellet was signed as a free-agent back on July1.  Having played the past five  seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, #61 is the only number Ouellet has worn in the NHL.  The no. 61 has only been worn by three former Habs players; Jason Ward, Ben Maxwell, and recently by Raphael Diaz.

#63 Matthew Peca

Mathew Peca was also a free-agent pickup.  He broke into the NHL two seasons ago with Tampa Bay where he also wore #63.  A number that only two other Canadiens have ever worn; Craig Darby and Andreas Engqvist

#90 Tomas Tatar

Tomas Tatar was part of the trade that sent Max Pacioretty to Vegas.  Tatar wore no. 21 during his stay with Detroit.  During his two month stint with Vegas, Tatar switched to no. 90.  And chose that number No. 90 with the Canadiens.  A number that only one ever player in Canadiens history ever wore.  Joe Juneau wore it for parts of three seasons during the early 2000’s.

#27 Karl Alzner

Although Karl Alzner was a UFA signing from the 2017-18 season, Alzner wore #22 last season with the Canadiens when he first joined the team.  But with Alex Galchenyuk traded to Arizona, Alzner reverted to his old number 27 he wore with the Washington Capitals for nine seasons, and decided to switched to no. 27 prior to the start of 2018-19.  Some of the popular former Habs to have worn number 27 other than Galchenyuk include, Frank Mahovlich, Shayne Corson, Mathieu Schneider, and Alex Kovalev.
