CBC Shuts out Habs
-- by Mario Perrazzino; GOHABS.com
This season, 13 Canadiens games will show up on TSN's National coverage, and another handful on CBC.
Many, including myself, have inquired why don't the Canadiens have their own regional English TV network, like the other Canadian clubs do.
Well every Friday Pierre Macguire, at 5:30pm, takes phone calls and emails Mitch Melnick's radio show on the Team990 , and I asked that very question to Pierre.
Pierre answered that a few years ago TSN had a 20 game Habs regional schedule (just like they do with Toronto). Problem lies with the NHL blackout rules which prohibits Canadiens broadcast outside the Montreal area. Pierre argues that if Canadiens games were able to be broadcasted Montreal to Newfoundland, TSN would jump on the occasion.
Oh yeah, hockey ratings in Canada are fantastic. CBC is reporting a 50% increase from two seasons ago, and TSN a whopping 200%. Maybe it's about time the NHL re-vistis their ancient TV blackout rules.
